In the Studio with Carl Belz on Joseph Marioni

In the catalog for Joseph Marioni's exhibition at the Rose Art Museum, which in turn was the last exhibition to be made by the late Carl Belz. Apparently because someone who was on the museum's board didn't like Joe's paintings, and threatened to pull their money if the museum didn't fire Belz. Carl has proven this in the interview I did with him. Sad to see politics getting in the way of great paintings. In the catalog Carl told the story of being introduced to the work of Marioni. It's such a wonderful story. I'm tired of uploading it again and again in PDF form, and they just keep getting deleted over time. So why not just put each scanned paper on here for you the viewer.

Two Amazing Papers on Painting (files updated)

I was speaking to a few painting colleagues online the past few days, and the idea of terminology came up. I have said that I am not an Abstract Painter, because my work does not take from anything that is already there. I am not a cubist, where I am breaking down the picture into many sides, I am not a geometric painter, taking ideas from buildings and other places. I simply make paintings, color and texture are my friends in my work. I am what painters such as Ryman and Marden would call a Realist, meaning I make REAL paintings, not paintings that are OF anything, just paintings. But someone such as Frederic Matys Thursz (Pictured Below) would say I am an Actualist. As for his terminology  I make "Actual" Paintings. You can read further on the subject in the paper he wrote back in 1986.

The other paper contained in this post is one from a particular favorite of mine. The Painter Joseph Marioni. This paper was written by a colleague of his, and recently mine too, Mr. Carl Belz. It was written for the catalogue of his exhibition at the Rose Art Museum which Mr. Belz curated. It is one of my favorite papers on a painter and on painting.

Who's Afraid of Red Yellow and Blue...The documentary.

I have been working on this documentary for over a year now. Getting ready to make my second November filming trip to NYC. November 2011 was the first NYC filming trip I made. During that visit, I got to interview Peter Reginato, Karen Wilkin, John Zinsser, and Klaus Kertess. I got to meet Pat Steir (we had to make a raincheck for another day), and Ronnie Landfield (whom I interviewed on the next trip to NYC in April of 2012).

I feel amazing to have gotten this far with the film and am happy to share with you a recent trailer I made to show to some prospective funders. I know that in the future I'll be making a second version of the trailer, but this is with what I have right now.



I hope you enjoy it. As I was working on the trailer, I finally came up with the name for the documentary. If you know me, you know I was thinking of calling it Painters Painting Two....or maybe Too. Kinda cheesy, but hey I couldn't come up with much better. After working on the trailer a bit I was just thinking about it while waiting for sleep. Suddenly I thought of the title 'Birth Of Venus' or maybe Re-Birth...but that sounded more like a sculpture film. I thought the idea of naming it after a famous painting could be a possible good idea. Almost immediately the name flashed in my mind.

WHO'S AFRAID OF RED YELLOW AND BLUE

One of the many great titles for paintings that one of my absolute favorite painters Barnett Newman gave to his work. But it also rang true with what I felt I was trying to accomplish with this film. To give a sense that even 60 years later, people are still (to use the analogy) afraid or abstract modern art. And I hope with this film that it will give people a much needed eye into the world of these people, which will inevitably give people more insight than before into the world of Non-representational painting and sculpture. As I do have Peter Reginato, an amazing sculptor in the film and am in the process of interviewing Forrest 'Frosty' Myers for the film too. I didn't want to give the film an overtly painting type title.

I am about to make another trip for filming next month and have had much help from some amazing people to allow me to make this film. I have a donation button below if you would like to help out. Three Painters...One Guide

I was just spending some time looking over things I could add to this blog, since I know I don't add much to it these days. I seem to add more that has to do with my film, than with myself.

I wanted to bring to your attention, another wonderful piece written by Mr. Carl Belz. On three great painters I have recently been able to get to know a bit better. Ronnie Landfield, Sandi Slone, and Darryl Hughto. Funny thing, is that Carl didn't know it, but I have been working on getting interviews with all three of these painters for my documentary film. It makes me want to get my visits in even more with Sandi and Darryl, since I have already gotten about 4 hours of interview with Ronnie...and there's plenty more to come. Then on top of all of that, I'm going to be heading back to NH to visit Mr. Belz once again, so we can spend more time talking about all the wonderful painters and sculptors I have filmed for this wonderful document on modern art and it's practitioners.

In the meantime. I highly recommend taking a few minutes, which I hope after reading will mean a few hours of research, and dig into what Mr. Belz has to say.

A wonderful article on fellow painters.

I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up two days ago and found this in my home page feed of blogs that I actively read and follow. A very well respected and admired curator Carl Belz decided to write a nice piece on a few fellow painters, and included myself in the writing. Put a big smile on my face that still hasn't went away. I am very thankful to Mr. Belz for his kindness in writing about my work and the work of fellow painters.

This is to become a historical document on modern painting at the beginning of the 21st century. And I hope one that will be as beloved 40 years from now as the seminal 1972 painting documentary by Emile De Antonio 'Painters Painting' is right now.
