I began these out of a dream of a very small work of portable art that could be easily transported and easily viewed. A freestanding set of paintings all wrapped up into one work. I originally imagined they would be much smaller, but the day after the vision, I began making them larger, why, because I can. Also because I was wondering if I could, as I was stepping out on new ground for myself with these. I only made four, so far, but there is much more to come. I love the idea of a painting that can sit with you all the time and not just be a piece on a wall. Originally the vision was to see them sitting on a desk and being enjoyed from all 5 sides, since you have the 6th side for placement. None are signed, but they all come with a certificate of authenticity that includes photos of the front and back, which ever is which.

This particular one is a forest green wood chassis, yellow acrylic yarn, and black acrylic texture with coal dust mixed in. When the light hits the coal just right it glistens.

One of the things that gets me most about these works is the amount of visual data they give to the mind. It's peaks and valleys, it's ins and outs, it's interior and exterior all vying for attention of the sensitive observer at once.

I came back from visiting some galleries today to find this happening on my painting. So naturally I grabbed my cameraphone and got some pics. Thankfully this new cameraphone is so much better than my i-4 which stunk for taking pics of dominantly red paintings. This LGG4 is much better at it. Click on the images to open them larger. Interior, Exterior, and Textural...

My newest painting... 01-15-2015 has really upped the ante about how I am not only an exterior painter, the paint no longer sits on a flat surface. The paintings now also have an interior, one with which I am striving to learn about and explore. There is not much written about interior painting at present. There are only a handful of painters I know of that deal with the interior. Granted from looking at their work, their interior is not the same as mine, there's is more a byproduct of the exterior, whereas my paintings are definitely dealing with that elusive interior space between the front of the painting and the back, which my new paintings also deal with. What becomes of the wall, and the space that became the back of the painting, never looked at by anyone who didn't have the painting in their hands. In my original Yarn Painting #1, the interior, like the rest of those painters, was hardly there. Focusing more on the surface, and exterior. I blocked out as much as I felt I could of it, and only gave a slight nod to the interior, by showing off the chassis. With the birth of the larger Yarn Paintings, the interior became inevitable and I began to realize it was something I needed to learn about.

The interior of this painting are really shown off in these pictures. You get the best sense I can give you in reproduction of how the light plays into the interior and finally onto the wall behind the painting. Click on the image to see a larger version so you can have more to enjoy.

These days I think a lot about Lucio Fontana along with Fabian Marcaccio. The two painters I feel were the first to explore the interior of painting.

Brutal Whitness

Working on my second painting of 2015. I began in darkness, now I continue into almost absolute whiteness, augmented by Nickel Titanate Yellow. The texture in this particular painting is reminding me of Clyfford Still in it's jagged mannerisms. No more talking, time for the visual.

Granted right now I do not have the space or wall for the nice painting on the white wall. The colors are exact, taken in daylight, no artificial bulbs to light the situation.

10-20-2014 and realizations...

I always feel like I get caught up on one aspect of being a painter. Usually the making part of things. But today, being an artist is so much more than just making the art. This website is a big part of being that artist. And must be attended to regularly, and with that, I say an honest sorry that I haven't been up to date on things here. My mind is always focused on new work and new ways to make my paintings, and even though there is as many hours in a day as you put into it, I know that I haven't been doing that. If I had I do believe I would be in such a better place for myself, I am tired of being in this predicament and am ready for a serious change. Time to put more hours into my life. Enjoy this new painting that was the first photographed by someone other than myself. Learning art photography from Portrait Painter Stephen Bennett has really given me more a sense of my own photographs.

09-14-2008 (For Sebastian)

Here's the newest addition to my long line of paintings. And the newest in my Dedication Series.

This one is dedicated to the Formula 1 Driver Sebastian Vettel who recently became the youngest to win a Formula 1 Race from Belgium. It was quite an astonishing race. I was working on this at the beginning of the race and it dried as the race was in session.

The Painting, like all the others in this series are all 10" Wide X 18" Tall.



Here is a lower detail of the painting. You can really see the texture quite beautifully in this pic. Along with the rest of the painting. It is quite a beautiful painting. Reminding me of a red Bordeaux along with a great loaf of bread. So naturally it makes me hungry looking at this.
