Quote of the Day 03-02-2012

To begin the year. I'll begin with a quote from one of my absolute favorite painters and good friend Joseph Marioni. This is from a paper he wrote in 1992 called "Socrates and the Alligator".

"It has always struck me as quite curious that the principles of art, in the classical tradition, were not formulated by artists but rather by philosophers."

He's speaking about how we are still using terms brought forth not be artists, but by philosophers. People who really didn't know much about art, and even less about painting.

Quote for the day...5-04-09

Today's quote comes from the documentary on Brice Marden from 1977. It's all about painting today.

"It's hard to look at paintings. It's really difficult, very strenuous kind of activity, but very very rewarding. Just like it's strenuous to listen to a great piece of music, they're very complicated, you have to think a lot. You have to be able to bring all sorts of things together in your mind, your imagination, your whole body. Really get off on it. It's a very high experience. It isn't something that comes out and hits you over the head, it's something very deep and felt."

Quote of the day 3-26-2009

Today our quote is from the great painter Morris Louis from 1954 when he wrote this.

"Your bad paintings hold the key to your development, and you should risk failure by pursuing what these, rather than your better works suggested."



So the moral of today's words of wisdom is to not be afraid to go too far with your painting, because it can be those times when you have a tremendous breakthrough in your work.

Quote for the day...3-25-09

This one is a good one. It come from an artist known as Julian Schnabel. It is from his book CVJ. Which you can find out there if you do some digging.

"NEVER LISTEN TO ANYBODY WHEN IT COMES TO BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN PAINTINGS."



I have heeded this advice many times when someone who doesn't know about painting will try to tell me how I should paint my paintings. So next time someone says that you should change something in your work. Just politely say thanks and keep on doing what you are doing.
