January Memories 1

I didn't realize until just minutes ago that a number of my exhibitions have all been in January. From my first NYC exhibition that I was in to the next year when I was in my first small group exhibition in Chelsea. Just spending a moment to remember the wonderful opportunities that have come around the beginning of the new year.

My first NYC exhibition was 2013 in Williamsburg Brooklyn at Sideshow Gallery, Owner Richard Timperio got known for holding the biggest and most democratic exhibition on the planet. It ran until the year he passed away, when most of the work was done by all the wonderful helpers that Rich always was blessed to have around him. I cannot take away from Rich's eye for hanging exhibitions. The guy could have given classes on it. But how do you teach something that is so ingrained within you?

The first show I was in there was called SIDESHOW NATION. There were around 500 artists from around the world in this show. Mostly I think everyone was from the NY area, along with a number of us who sent in work. I sent this painting in...

 

It was also one of the paintings I took to visit Joseph Marioni, he liked it and put it on his wall. I was very happy. 

 

Here it is hanging UP in Sideshow Gallery, photo taken by Peter Reginato. I was filming that night because Loren Munk couldn't be there himself. I didn't film the show the way he would have, but I did a pretty good job.

Has Anyone Seen Leger's Palette Lately? Frederic Matys Thursz

I have been asked a number of times about this wonderful piece by Frederic Matys Thursz, one of the lesser known of the Radical Painting group. (If you know me, you know why I said that.) Frederic Thursz is probably the best writer on painting i've read. His writings are so visual they work perfectly with his own paintings. This guy was truly in touch with what he was doing. Most painters including me wish we were this lyrical with our talking about painting.

Take some time, you can enlarge the photos, if you know how to do so. If you don't know, what you do is when you click on the image and it pops up in the shadowbox. You then right click and choose to Open Image in New Tab. That'll let you see the image the way I uploaded it, making the reading that much easier to do. Or just click the Command + buttons to enlarge the page, then when done click command and 0 to reset your text size to normal.

I remember how difficult it was to read papers like this around 99, but slowly it's been getting easier, thanks to people like me, so you can view rare papers. I've got another paper or two that i'll be sharing in the next few days.

Kenworth Moffett RIP

Kenworth W. Moffett died yesterday at 10:40 AM peacefully in Stamford, CT, after a prolonged battle with heart problems, though he put up a valiant fight for decades ,to survive to write and exhibit the artists he loved so much, he succumbed at age 81.Despite his ongoing battle , he was Director of 2 Museums , Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale (Now NSU Museum Fort Lauderdale), then MCA Denver(then MoCAD ), and was Curator of Contemporary Art at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, prior to that, while simultaneously, also a full time Professor of Art History at Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Mass. Ken's writing was published internationally in magazines,books, & journals, throughout his career. He is survived by daughter Kay, and wife Cynthia.

I only recently got to meet KM through the yearly shows in Brooklyn at Sideshow Gallery. I offered to do an interview with him, but unfortunately the circumstances never conspired to allow it to happen. Now I find myself being quite saddened that I didn't get to tell his story. I can only hope that maybe there is someone out there that knew Moffett and decides to make a book on this man. Thanks Lucy Baker for keeping me abreast of what has been going on.

Days before, local historian Andrew Leibenguth came out and did his own interview and took many pictures. There are quite a lot of large photos on his page that you can really glimpse how things went that day.

On the evening of the opening Andrew came by to document the opening. Including all from the city and the wonderful people behind TAIR and Faces of the World. Wonderful evening.

Just a few days to go.

It was in 2011 that I actively began my journey to meet, greet, and learn from some of whom I felt were the best painters and sculptors around today. Now in 2014, the Coney Island Film Society is going to be screening a culmination of many of those interactions. You should be able to meet and greet with a number of the films participants this evening before the screening, so get there a bit early.
