A number of years back as I visited NYC, I visited Painter Anders Knutsson in his Bed-Stuy studio. He talked with me about the Luminous Paintings he had been making since the 80's, and asked if there was a way to share their glow in a video form. at the time there were no cameras that could see in light that low and still have quality video. Eventually a number of them are available but alas, they are out of my grasp at the time. So I suggested that long exposure pictures laid one after the other in the "timeline" of the video editing program might be of interest. He agreed and we sat about taking many photos of the one that he wished to work on that day. This is the result of that blessed day.
So as Anders wished, we kept working on more video essays on various paintings that are difficult to see in reproduction so the idea of a group of still images faded together fills a need to grasp the emitted beauty of these paintings through the computer, and I think we've done a pretty cool thing here. The memories are all quite wonderful, watching Ander stand by the window, ready to recharge the paintings as needed. Like a Soldier of Painting he made sure it all ran smooth. The biggest problem I had was during editing, so many times I had problems with an edit and would have to defer to Anders how to fix it. Usually it involved moving around an image or six, but after much trepidation that has turned into beauty, here is that second video on Field Of Faith.
If you enjoy the music, it's actually one of my mid-90's guitar improvisations that I was vehemently recording every chance I got. Every chance I picked up the guitar at that period of time, I was immediately putting a tape in the recorder and pressing the button. This is what happened one of those times. I actually had a guitar cable that wasn't soldered together correctly, so one day it fell apart. Thankfully I had the idea that it might make for a cool sound, since at the time I was very much interested in music such as Pan-Sonic, and Jim O'Rourke. So grabbing the guitar and plugging everything in, set up a patch that was filled with echo and went to work. This song is basically all volume swells but with a bad cable and lots of effects. It's such a haunting soundscape that it made me feel as if I were deep in the Icelandic north. Hence the name... ICELAND.
I also just made a "SHORT" of the Field of Faith painting and will be sharing that in time. Just want people to see these first.
